Secondo alcuni autori del passato, Medusa era una bella donna trasformata in mostro dalla Dea Atena.
Aveva il potere di pietrificare chiunque avesse attraversato il suo sguardo.
Più tardi fu decapitata da Perseo che portò con sé la sua testa in Africa dove la usò contro il Titano Atlante trasformandolo in pietra e dando origine all'odierna catena montuosa dell'Atlante, in Nord Africa.
